LONDON : Continuum Recycling- the recycled-PET joint venture between Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) and ECO Plastics located east of England has achieved rare success by ramping up 100% capacity and sorting quarter of a billion bottles.
Continuum operates from the ECO Plastics’ facility in Hemswell, the world’s biggest plastics sorting facility. The landmark feat was achieved in a record time of nine months when the £15 million facility was opened by then Waste Minister, Lord Taylor of Holbeach.
Since opening, Continuum has received a number of honors and accolades. This includes the ‘Best Partnership’ prize at the Green Business Awards, in recognition for the facility’s impact on the UK’s domestic recycling industry. ECO Plastics Ltd is the UK’s leading and highest quality reprocessor of recyclable materials and the only UK business producing ‘food grade’ quality PET pellet. It uses state of the art automated sorting systems by which bottles can be recycled into a wide range of products with virtually nothing wasted.
Hemswell facility is estimated to save around 33,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and is able to handle 140,000 ton recyclable materials per annum. Continuum Recycling is the first time that the beverage and recycling industries have formed a long-term strategic partnership.
