Since February this year, Teijin (Tokyo) group company Toho Tenax Europe (TTE) has been shipping samples of thermoplastic carbon
fiber prepregs employing matrix resins such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polycarbonate (PC) and polyetherimide (PEI) from a production facility in Oberbruch, Germany. The materials are believed to be being sampled by end users in the aerospace and general industrial sectors.
Commercial supply is slated to start in September. Automotive represents another target sector for the high impact resistance materials.
In March of this year, Teijin completed development of a technology that enables molding of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) using thermoplastics resin within 1 minute. Leveraging this high efficiency process, the company aims to penetrate various markets where strength and light weight command a premium, including automotive and aerospace.-mpweditorial@ubm.com
