State govt launches eco-friendly water bottles at Vrithi ’25

Thiruvananthapuram: In a move towards sustainable living, state govt launched fully compostable water bottles at ‘Vrithi 2025′ Green Kerala Conclave, which concluded on Saturday in the capital city.

The eco-friendly green bottles, made from biodegradable materials, are set to offer a viable alternative to plastic. The initiative, led by Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC) under the department of irrigation, introduces drinking water packaged in compostable bottles under state’s ‘Hilly Aqua’ brand. These green bottles, while similar in appearance to plastic, are 100% biodegradable and compostable through natural processes.

The raw materials used are certified by the central pollution control board and meet both national and international standards, including ISO 17088 and TUV certifications. The materials are sourced from Green Bio Products, a Kerala-based company specializing in eco-friendly alternatives. Though currently more expensive to produce than conventional plastic bottles, these compostable versions are ideal for environmentally sensitive locations, especially where plastic use is restricted.

Authorities believe they will be particularly useful in pilgrimage destinations like Sabarimala, which draw millions of visitors annually.

The conclave, organized by state govt, aimed to promote innovative and sustainable waste management practices. It featured global experts, policymakers, diplomats, entrepreneurs and investors, with exhibitions and stalls showcasing green technologies and products.

By unveiling the compostable water bottles, Kerala continues to strengthen its position as a national leader in environmentally responsible initiatives, setting a precedent for other states to follow.

The conclave also featured innovative presentations on advanced technologies in waste management.
