A proposed state ban on plastic bags will not become law in Oregon – at least not this year.
But the proposed citywide ban was still moving forward.
Senator Mark Hass (D-Beaverton) initially drafted SB 536, which would allow stores to offer only paper and reusable bags for customers. The bill also called for a 5-cent charge on paper bags.
The latest change was that the bill failed to make it out of a senate committee after meeting some strong opposition from the plastics industry.

Meantime, Portland Mayor Sam Adams said he will continue to move forward with a possible city ban on plastic bags.
A statement released by the mayor’s office Monday said Adams was “disappointed that the state ban appears to have died, and he’s committed to moving forward with a local ban of plastic bags.”
