PolyOne stepped up its antimicrobial plastics line with the launch of WithStand Antimicrobial Solutions based on
Sanitized MedX 200s active ingredients at Compamed 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The new products for Europe were developed in association with Sanitized AG, a producer of antimicrobials.
“The excellent cooperation between PolyOne and Sanitized AG allows us to combine PolyOne’s experience formulating medical plastics with Sanitized’s extensive knowledge of the optimal protection of articles against bacteria. Working closely together at even the early stages of development, we can design the most appropriate, customized solutions for our healthcare customers,” said Larry Johnson, PolyOne global healthcare marketing director.
In Europe, six to nine percent of hospital patients are affected by hospital acquired infections (HAI) each year.
The technology is available as a masterbatch (combined with colorants) or as Trilliant healthcare compounds, including polyolefins, thermoplastic elastomers, and engineering thermoplastics such as copolyesters, polycarbonate, and ABS.
WithStand products containing Sanitized MedX 200s antimicrobials are available in Europe, while the remainder of the WithStand range is available globally.
More choices in color concentrates
In a separate announcement, PolyOne added a transparent version to its USP Class VI-certified OnColor HC Plus color concentrates for medical devices. Transparent OnColor HC Plus color concentrates for medical-grade Eastman Tritan copolyesters have recently been certified to meet the USP Class VI testing protocol.
NEU Specialty Engineered Materials, a subsidiary of PolyOne, announced the launch of NEUSoft materials for medical applications. They are transparent polyether or polyester-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) formulations and blends that have good elasticity as well as excellent abrasion and tear resistance. They recently received USP Class VI and ISO 10993 certifications.
In addition, NEU recently unveiled NEUSpeed Rapid Response, a globally available service that offers to fulfill orders within one business day for a select group of USP Class VI and ISO 10993 certified formulations. With this service, orders will be fulfilled at NEU’s facility within one business day of receipt and will be shipped according to each customer’s specified shipping method.
PolyOne also showed its Trilliant Radiation Shielding solutions, which offer a non-lead alternative to radiation shielding. These RoHS-compliant, polymer-metal composites shield radiation at the same levels as lead.
