Switzerland could miss legally required recycling targets because of undeclared exports of plastic (PET) bottles, offiicals in Bern say.

Latest estimates show the country’s rate of recycling for plastic bottles was 80 percent, still above the legally required 75 percent, the federal environment office said.

But illegal exports of plastic -sold largely to Asian markets – could drop the average.

Switzerland’s record remains well above the European average for recycling, with 94 percent of glass bottles returned and 91
percent of aluminum cans.

The European average on aluminum can returns, by comparison, was just 64 percent.
