According to a news report on www.timesofindia.indiatimes.com, Kolkata in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal will ban all plastic cups
and plates along with plastic packages of gutkha and pan masala from September 9 onwards.
The report said that State Environment Department Minister Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar directed the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) to enforce this ban in a month’s time. WBPCB had invited all municipalities in the state to a meeting that discussed the issue on August 9.
On August 10, the minister appealed to all municipality representatives for support of imposing spot fines on offenders. He also said WBPCB needs to meet jute bag manufacturers to effectively utilize their products as an effective alternative to plastic carrying bags.
The news also reported that the minister directed WBPCB authorities to finalize modalities for enforcing the ban with the police brass. Traders using banned plastic will be fined 500 rupees while the same for their customers will be 50 rupees.
