Hockenheim / Birmingham, 12 February 2013 – The Weidenhammer Packaging Group (WPG), Europe’s leading supplier of composite cans, composite drums and rigid plastic containers, is presenting a comprehensive range of cardboard and plastic packaging solutions at Packaging Innovations 2013 in Birmingham from 27 to 28 February 2013. At the UK’s leading show for primary and secondary packaging, Weidenhammer exhibits its latest innovations at stand J55. The gastight and convenient Peel-off Top increases the number of variations for composite cans on the market to include sensitive products. Weidenhammer also exhibits its first In-Mould Labelling (IML) plastic packaging solution produced in the UK, an attractive biscuit box for United Biscuits.
After a successful debut in the past year, Germany-based WPG attends Packaging Innovations for the second time. “We want to further expand our market position as specialist for rigid, attractively labeled convenience packaging in the UK,” European Sales Director Thomas Strieder explained. “Packaging Innovations provides a perfect opportunity for face-to-face meetings with our customers and business affiliates. Moreover, we can show potential new customers our latest packaging concepts.”
Successful development of UK business
Since the foundation of Weidenhammer UK in 2008, Weidenhammer has intensified its presence in the British market and has invested more than £10 million in the reconstruction of its production facility in Bradford. “Against the odds of a tense market environment, our business development in the UK has been very positive,” said Thomas Strieder. One reason is the extension of the product portfolio. Last year, Weidenhammer started its first IML production of plastic packaging in the UK. With this technology, both the plastic container and labelling are created in a single manufacturing step, offering plenty of room for creativity when it comes to packaging design.
Since August 2012, Weidenhammer supplies United Biscuits with a high-quality IML box for their “Family Circle” biscuits. The square-shaped box contains a selection of biscuit specialities which are highly demanded among British consumers. “We see great potential for IML packaging in the UK and this new box is an important reference product for us,” Thomas Strieder confirmed. Visitors to the WPG stand can discover a great variety of plastic packaging solutions in different shapes and sizes based on IML for refrigerated and frozen foods, as well as non-refrigerated products. In addition, Weidenhammer showcases PermaSafe®, the “reinvention of the can”, offering a unique brand presentation for pasteurised food products. Impermeable to oxygen and water vapor, it guarantees maximum hygiene and a longer shelf life for processed foods and other perishable products.
Large variety of packaging solutions
At Stand J55, the packaging specialist also presents its extensive range of cardboard solutions. Thanks to high stability, product and aroma protection, as well as individual design options, Weidenhammer’s composite can is one of the safest and most attractive packaging solutions for moisture-sensitive products – from snacks to instant beverages and non-food products. Customers like Mondelez-Kraft Foods, United Biscuits, Tetley Tea, Marigold, Yorkshire Crisps, Symingtons and JTI already take advantage of the Weidenhammer solutions in UK. The Peel-off Top can is the latest innovation. It is a composite can with gastight closure, an easy-to-open membrane with a ring pull or flat tab. Thanks to its outstanding gas tightness, the new closure system for composite cans is suitable for powdered milk, nuts and other highly sensitive products.
