Unprecedented in the world, the product simplifies the cooking process, bringing greater productivity and offering a more sustainable solution for customers Braskem, the leading producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and the world’s largest producer of biopolymers, has just launched an unprecedented worldwide resin, directed the footwear segment. The new resin to EVA (copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate) allows the most rapid and sustained production of shoes, quenching the curing process for bonding soles, which eliminates the emission of ozone and reduces by 26% the cost of this production step.
The release integrates the portfolio stamp Braskem Maxio ®, created to identify resins that provide greater efficiency for plastic chain and reduce the environmental impact in the transformation process. In this segment, collage-based EVA midsoles is an important step in the process because the durability of a shoe is directly linked to the quality of adherence of its components after the curing process. The resin VA3010A developed by Braskem allows the bonding process to occur without the need for the step of curing UV (ultraviolet light irradiation). This innovation eliminates the use of ultraviolet curing equipment that requires constant maintenance and process control, and is still emitting ozone, a gas harmful to human health and the environment. Moreover, with the new resin, there is a reduction in energy consumption in the production process, making the manufacture of footwear safer and more sustainable process.
The savings generated by this innovation in the footwear industry can provide a cost reduction of up to 26% in step of gluing the shoe production process, and allow more differentiated designs in making the midsole. The size of this reduction depends on the type of footwear and the configuration of each production line. The new resin allows further gains in the quality of soles, which results in lowering of shoe return on account of defects, and therefore even lower costs to the converters.
To achieve this result, was developed together with the company Killing (www.killing.com.br), Braskem’s partner, a new cold applied primer that complements the bonding resin on different substrates such as rubber, PVC and synthetic leather, replacing The solution with the former primer. The solution is based on a concept in which two new components are needed for adhesion, both the EVA as the primer, and this patented technology.
“This new resin will bring greater competitiveness for the footwear sector in Brazil, which was responsible for the production of over 800 million pairs in 2011. The resin VA3010A is the work we have done in our Center for Technology and Innovation to identify trends and find smart solutions to contribute to the challenges of our clients, “says Edison Land, director of polyethylene from Braskem.
“We estimate 60% of the domestic market in the first two years of operation. This development is another example of the commitment of Braskem in the continuing search for innovation and for providing sustainable solutions to customers in line with the vision of becoming a world leader in sustainable chemicals by 2020, “says Land.
