Braskem launches bio-attributed PP for packaging applications

Braskem announced the launch of a new grade of bio-attributed polypropylene (PP) in the US market.

The Brazilian petrochemical giant has added the bio-circular resin to its range of circular solutions, sold under the brand Wenew. The brand was first launched in 2022 and currently includes 58 polymers with varying amounts of post-consumer recycled content.

The new grade is derived from used cooking oil and is designed for packaging applications for the restaurant and snack food industries. Braskem says the ISCC-plus certified resin has the same properties and performance as fossil-based PP.

“Our bio-circular PP is currently being supplied to various converters which support the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry,” said Bill Diebold, vice president, Braskem America Polyolefins. “Ideal users include QSR chains, retail food suppliers, traditional restaurants, and snack food companies especially those seeking to enhance circularity from their cooking oil usage. This versatile material is suitable for a wide range of applications, including food packaging, flexible packaging (such as films), and consumer goods.”

Braskem said it has partnered with several suppliers in the value chain who convert bio-circular feedstock into polypropylene. In Europe, Braskem already partners with stakeholders to increase the amount of circular content on its Wenew PP, including Shell.

In other circularity efforts, last year Braskem invested $87 million to increase its  production of bio-based plastic feedstock in Brazil by almost 59,000 tonnes.
