American Waste Control’s Mr. Murph 2.0 facility takes on Tulsa’s holiday recyclables

American Waste Control’s Mr. Murph 2.0 recycling facility is taking on Tulsa’s holiday recyclables with the help of AI robotics.

FOX23 stopped by Tulsa Recycle & Transfer for a tour to see Mr. Murph in action on Tuesday.

Robert Pickens, Vice President of Recycling at American Waste Control, told FOX23 their Unboxing Christmas Campaign started on Tuesday.

“We are gonna see an increase of recyclables between 12 and 13 percent starting today for the next two weeks,” he said. “We’ll see that influx of holiday packaging coming in on the curbside programs and also our drop off Mr. Murph program.”

He said they can recycle steel and aluminum cans, plastic containers, and also your holiday paper and boxes. Pickens said any wrapping paper that isn’t foil and doesn’t have any glitter can be recycle, and also anything with a screwed on tap or clip on lid plastic wise. He said they can also recycle glass jars and bottles that are brown, green, and clear.

He explained Mr. Murph includes AI robotics, and all of their equipment is new.

The new equipment allows them to collect more recyclables here in Tulsa and also take out more items that should not be in the recyclables.

“The robotics are assisting us this holiday season with helping us remove the items that should not be in the recyclables,” Pickens said.

Pickens said the robotics can do up to 26,000 picks per ship, and are helpful getting the smaller items which are more difficult for their quality control workers to get out.

He said it is very exciting to have Mr. Murph 2.0 at the facility here in Tulsa with its technological advancements.

“It’s gonna take recycling in the Tulsa metro market right through this next century,” he said.

“We have the most advanced items available, we can process recyclables up the 53,000 pounds per hour, so we can handle all the recyclables in the Tulsa metro, both residential and commercial, recycling that we have here.”

Pickens said the items they remove the most are plastic bags. He said you can return those plastic bags to the retailer where you got them as well.

He said 95% of the recyclables from Mr. Murph stay in Oklahoma, and they want to help with local jobs and the economy by keeping them here.
