Aimplas unveils material certifications, recycling technologies at PRSE

Aimplas, the Spanish Plastics Technology Centre, is showcasing its advancements in recycling technology, material certification, and industry training at PRSE.

Aimplas has been at the forefront of developing innovative recycling techniques, including mechanical, chemical, enzymatic, and solvent-based processes. These technologies are crucial for a range of industries, including packaging, automotive, construction, and textiles. The centre’s latest advancements focus on improving material recovery efficiency through cutting-edge processes such as pyrolysis, gasification, solvolysis, delamination, size reduction, and advanced separation techniques.

The centre’s leading researcher in chemical recycling, Mireia Fernández, will join a roundtable discussion titled “Exploring Pathways for Physical and Chemical Recycling” on April 2.

With an emphasis on tackling complex waste streams, Aimplas is developing methods to recycle multilayer plastics and cross-linked polymers. Their de-crosslinking solutions for rubbers and elastomers, along with innovations in recovering critical raw materials (CRMs), are particularly relevant to industries such as renewable energy and electronics.

Aimplas is also driving progress in upcycling, transforming plastic waste into high-performance materials for advanced applications. A key focus is on refining cleaning and decontamination processes, including the use of supercritical fluid technology, which enhances material recovery while preserving its quality and usability.

Among the many ongoing R&D projects Aimplas is showcasing at PRSE are Ellipse, Promofer, Retain, Innpressme, Reclaim, Textended, Free4lib, Solrec, Cisutac, Rewind, Smile-City, Polymeer, Repurpose, Rebiocycle, Red Marfil, Ciclicom, Reciplus, Oasis, And Deconwaste. Select projects will be featured with live demonstrators, allowing visitors to witness these innovations firsthand.

Recycled material quality and certification

To support businesses in meeting sustainability goals, Aimplas offers specialised testing services for recyclability and recycled content assessment, following accredited methodologies such as EN 13430 and EN 15343. The centre also provides Challenge Tests to determine the safety of recycled plastics for food-contact applications.

Additionally, Aimplas assists companies in obtaining certifications like RecyClass, APR, Petcore, and Blue Angel, ensuring compliance with industry standards. Their consultancy services extend to optimising recycling workflows and improving the circularity of plastic products.

Recognising the importance of knowledge transfer, Aimplas will also present its extensive training programs at PRSE 2025, which include specialised courses on plastic recycling, sustainability legislation, and new processing techniques.
