Welsh recycler Plastic Sorting has been given a £450,000 grant by the Welsh Assembly to buy colour sorting and hot wash equipment for a new plant in Ebbw Vale.
This will augment the company’s plant in Pontypool where it sorts bottles by polymer with equipment funded under another Welsh Assembly grant, of £850,000, in 2007.
The new equipment will be installed at a temporary site for operator training until the Ebbw Vale site is ready next year. The new factory will incorporate rainwater harvesting for most of its process water and its heat and electricity will be generated from a renewable fuel source.
The Welsh Assembly grant is from the Regional Capital Access Fund administered by the Department for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, whose objectives include establishing a strategic plastic sorting facility. Plastic Sorting is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cleanstream Group Community Interest Company and additional funding is being provided through Charity Bank. Plastics Sorting is working with the local social enterprise EFTEV Enterprises and hopes to enable further joint sustainable development at the site in Ebbw Vale, linked to the plastics reprocessing plant, in the near future.
