Evonik Industries AG is expanding its triallyl cyanurate (TAC) and Taicros triallyl isocyanurate production plant in Wesseling, Germany to meet the rising quality demand from the photovoltaic (PV) industry.

According to Evonik, production is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2013. Accurate investment figure was not released but said to be in low double-digit million euro range.

The highly active crosslinking additives TAC and Taicros are used in plastics and rubber. Important growth drivers here are the growth of the global PV market and the increasingly stringent quality requirements of producers of PV modules. Silicon cells are laminated in transparent plastic films. Crosslinking additives improve the quality of the encapsulation films that protect the PV cells, particularly in regard to aging and color stability, while increasing the transparency of the films. They ensure that performance is maintained in the long term and increase the life of the solar modules.

Evonik says TAC and Taicros are important for the PV industry because they also reduce the cure time of the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulation film, thus increasing the efficiency of the production process. They can also be used in automotive and aircraft construction.
