LyondellBasell (LYB) produced and marketed more than 200,000 tonnes of recycled and renewable-based polymers in 2024, a 65% increase compared to the previous year.
The US-based polymer producer aims to produce and market 2 million tonnes of circular polymers annually by 2030. In its 2024 sustainability report, the company it is making ‘good progress’ towards this goal.

We are transforming our vision into lasting value, ensuring that we create meaningful impact for our customers, shareholders and society.”
The report lists LYB’s achievements in plastics circularity in 2024, including the foundation stone ceremony for its 50,000 toones/year chemical recycling plant in Wesseling, Germany. The company reiterated the possibility of building a second MoReTec plant at its refinery in Houston, Texas, with double the capacity of the Wesseling plant. A final investment decision is expected in 2026.
LYB also revealed its upgrade to the PreZero mechanical recycling plant in California is expected to be completed in early 2026. The company acquired PreZero’s recycling operations in Jurupa Valley in February 2024. It started manufacturing post-consumer recycled resin at the site the same year.
In April 2024, LYB and China-based recycling machinery manufacturer Genox Recycling also started operating a mechanical recycling plant in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province in Southern China.
Other highlights in 2024 included the acquisition of plastics recycler APK and investment in a recycling centre for automotive parts in Germany.
Further, LYB said it had no reportable losses of pellets to the environment from its operations in 2024.
