Solvay introduces new PVDF foam for aircraft

Air Craft Foam

Solvay Specialty Polymers introduced its second generation of Solef polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) foam for aircraft manufacturing at the recently concluded JEC Composites show in Paris, France and the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany.

According to the company, Solef 82050 is a fully moldable PVDF foam that passes key aircraft fire, smoke and toxicity tests including the FAR and AITM, meaning it is completely resistant to flame, total heat release, low toxicity on combustion products and reduced optical smoke density.

Compared with the first generation of Solef 80000 series e-PVDF, Solvay said the new polymer matrix has increased mechanical properties and higher temperature rating. In addition, Solef 82050 reduces weight significantly with a 50% density decrease over existing products.

The new product is offered as foamed molded items. Parts made of Solef 80000 e-PVDF are manufactured by JSP in partnership with Solvay Specialty Polymers.
