The Co-op has become the first retailer to support the Plastics Industry Recycling Action Plan (Pirap) and called on others to join the industry led strategy to boost the recycling of plastic packaging.
Pirap was launched in June 2015 by WRAP, the British Plastics Federation (BPF) and Plastics Europe and has nearly 50 signatories.
“We are committed to significantly increasing the recyclability of our packaging, but know that so much of the change needed must come from working together as an industry.Co-op environment manager Iain Ferguson said the company recognised it was essential for everyone to play their part in increasing plastic packaging recycling.
“We may be the first retailer to sign up to Pirap but we also want to use this opportunity to call on other retailers and suppliers to move with us,” he said.
Pirap brings together the entire plastic supply chain to commit to goals which include creating and promoting end markets for recycled plastic, extending the range of plastics collected from householders, improving engagement by householders, identifying and improving infrastructure and considering end life in design.
Helen Jordan, sustainability issues executive with the BPF, said: “Pirap was launched in 2015 to provide a collaborative approach to meeting the government plastic packaging targets.
”Pirap was the first time that the whole plastic packaging supply chain was brought together and shows how each stage of the supply chain can impact on recycling.”
