ALLAHABAD: This Magh Mela, beverages like tea, coffee, soup etc would only be allowed to be served in ‘kulhars’ (earthen cups) only.
The Magh Mela administration has banned the use of temporary utensils made of plastic and thermocol with an objective to protect the environment and send a strong message of environment protection among the pilgrims and devotees arriving Sangam to take holy dip on the pious occasion of Magh month.
This would be first time in the history of Magh Mela when kulhar (earthen cups) would be promoted with the message of protecting environment from hazardous effects of plastic and thermocol products.
District magistrate, Sanjay Kumar has asked Magh Mela authorities to promote use of ‘ kulhars’ in and around Mela campus with the message of save environment. He also made it clear that post Magh Mela, the ban on plastic and thermocol products would be continued.
The Magh Mela authorities have on their part have decided to constitute special teams comprising of lekhpals who would not take shops of eateries and other essential articles under scanner but would also be conducting surprise raids to check the menace.
A senior mela official told TOI ” with lakhs of devotees and pilgrims arriving Magh Mela commencing from January 12, 2017 to take holy dips, we have decided to spread the message of saving environments from plastics and thermocol products. He further added ” as majority of people know about the ill effects of plastic products, we are going to promote the use of earthen cups among devotees”.
