VANCOUVER : In an attempt to boost organic waste collection, Vancouver homes and duplexes will see food scraps being collected weekly starting next month. Mayor Gregor Robertson announced Thursday that the city would see green bins picked up weekly, but blue bin regular garbage only once every two weeks. He also said that the officials are exploring possibilities of including condos and apartment buildings in the program. Food waste is believed to constitute nearly 40 per cent of household garbage.
The move is part of the attempt to recycle all organics in Metro Vancouver by 2015, thereby achieving 70% garbage recycling. The city has already taken necessary steps to distribute information booklet in almost 90,000 households to create awareness about the new program. The city will build a new $5.4-million new food-scrap facility at its current transfer station in South Vancouver.
The new facility is being built in the same place as the current facility on West Kent Avenue between Cambie and Main Street so as to handle the additional organic waste. The Mayor stated that the city will ensure that proper odour-control mechanisms will be installed at the new facility to avoid any sort of inconvenience to the residents.
Metro Vancouver is planning to impose a ban on all organic waste going to landfill by 2015. This throws a big challenge for the city administration but the city is determined to go ahead with its plan and getting itself ready to handle nearly 50,000 tonnes of organic waste per year.
