NEW YORK: Yorwaste, the leading waste management and recycling solutions provider based in the UK, has submitted a planning application to City of York Council to build a new Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and waste transfer station at its existing Harewood Whin Resource Recovery Centre, near Rufforth.
The MRF will initially handle up to 35,000 tonnes of waste per annum. The waste handling capacity will be raised to around 60,000 tonnes by 2018. The recycling facility will process mixed recycling such as paper, plastic, cans and glass that are collected as part of kerbside household and commercial collections in the area.
Yorwaste has already carried out mass interaction and awareness campaigns among the local resident community. The consultation process will continue whilst City of York Council consider the application. The company expects to start the works of the recycling unit in autumn 2013, subject to obtaining planning permission. The construction of the plant is expected to be completed by 2014.
Once the new facilities are operational, Yorwaste has plans to close the Materials Recycling Facility at Hessay (leaving only its electrical recycling operation), which is already running at full capacity. Existing staff from Hessay will be transferred to Harewood Whin.
The new facility is estimated to produce up to 15 new jobs. Furthermore, a significant quantity of waste can be diverted from landfills.
