ORLEANS : Baltimore Ravens clinched the title defeating San Francisco 49 ers at the football extravaganza Superbowl 2013 last Sunday. Another winner of the event was no doubt the Recycling Industry. The synthetic turf installed at The Mercedes-Benz Super Dome in New Orleans was created with the help of recycled materials derived from end-of-life tyres.

The turf was designed by Ohio based Maumee Bay Turf Center. As many as 30,000 end-of-life tyres were ground up for making the turf. This translates to more than half a million pounds of recycled rubber. It took three weeks of continuous human effort to produce the turf. The turf is said to have at least 8 to 10 years of life. The synthetic turf will be donated to the charity group New Orleans Development Foundation.
